But what if absolute consistency on any issue from the left or the right, religious or secular, is an indication of mediocre intelligence and a lack of intellectual honesty? Ich beende meine Serie zu Frank Schaeffers Buch Crazy for God mit einigen Posts, die jeweils drei Zitate aus dem Buch enthalten, die ich für bedenkenswert erachte.

Fundamentalists never can just disagree. The person they fall out with is not only on the wrong side of an issue; they are on the wrong side of God. … A church split builds self-righteousness into the fabric of every new splinter group, whose only reason for existence is that they decide they are more moral and pure than their brethren. (30)

We Schaeffers never compromised. At times it seemed that only God knew how important we were, how right, how pure. But isolation and rejection by “The World” only confirmed our self-importance. es ist lieb von ihnen, dass Sie wieder einmal den Wachhund spielen. Was wäre die Gemeinde in Deutschland ohne solch gewissenhafte »Wächter auf der Mauer« wie Sie?
Messerscharf analysieren Sie seit Jahren sogenannte Irrlehren und prangern alles an, was nicht ihrer eigenen Rechts-Außen-Fundamentalismus-Sichtweise entspricht. Woher dieses Sendungsbewußtsein? Wer gibt Ihnen das Recht, in der Öffentlichkeit des Internets ein Pamphlet zu verbreiten, das von willkürlich aus dem Zusammenhang gerissenen Bibelstellen nur so strotzt und zu folgendem Fazit kommt:

Ich kann nur vor der Bewegung der „Emerging Church“ warnen. Sie kommt nicht aus dem Geist Gottes,
sondern aus den verführerischen Geistesmächten, die in der Endzeit immer offener eine falsche Chri-
stenheit aufbauen, die die Bibel und den wahren Herrn Jesus Christus verlassen hat und auf einem ver-
schlungenen Weg zu der Endzeit-Welteinheitsreligion ist. Dort wo die Bibel als absolute Wahrheit und
verbindliche Grundlage für Denken und Leben verlassen wird, da gibt es keinen festen Halt mehr, und
der Strom des gegenwärtigen Zeitlaufs trägt die irregeführten „modernen“ und „postmodernen“ Christen
immer weiter in den Abgrund der Hure Babylon, deren Ende das Gericht und der Feuersee ist.

Gut, daß Sie es erkannt haben! Eigentlich heißt es ja, die Liebe »erträgt alles, glaubt alles, hofft alles, duldet alles«. Aber Sie haben recht – was zuviel ist, ist zuviel! Also werfen Sie nicht nur mich, sondern auch einige andere meiner persönlichen Freunde, Bekannten und Vertreter der deutschsprachigen Bloggerszene (u.a. Warum sollten Sie auch das persönliche Gespräch mit uns suchen? Hätte Jesus sicher auch nicht so gemacht, oder? Einfach mal aus der Ferne mit Schrot geschossen. Ich weiß nicht, was mich am meisten an ihrem Schriftstück aufregt – ist es der arrogante Ich-weiß-alles-am-Besten-Tonfall? Der fragwürdige Umgang mit der Heiligen Schrift? Die Vor-Urteile, die vorausgesetzt werden? Die Tatsache, daß Sie die Micha-Initiative als »völlig verkehrt« und Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann und N.T. Wright als »Irrlehrer« bezeichnen? Nicht nur, daß sie den schriftgemäßen Umgang mit etwas, das Sie aus Ihrer Sicht als bedrohlich empfinden, verlassen – nein, was Sie betreiben ist Rufmord. Ist das, was Sie antreibt, wirklich die Liebe Christi? Oder zeigt sich hier wieder die häßliche Fratze jenes Geistes, der Paulus dazu antrieb, die Nachfolger Jesu zu verfolgen und der auch in der mittelalterlichen Inquisition sein Unwesen trieb? Sie machen mich traurig, Herr Ebertshäuser. Wie können Sie im Umgang mit Brüdern und Schwestern in Christus ein solches Verhalten an den Tag legen? Erinnern Sie sich an den Aufruf unseres Herrn: »Richtet nicht, auf daß ihr nicht gerichtet werdet« und tun Sie Buße!
Ich lade Sie ein, mit mir und evtl. einigen emergenten Freunden bei Kaffee und Kuchen das Gespräch zu suchen. Dialog statt engstirnigem Fanatismus scheint mir der bessere Weg zu sein. Vielleicht würden Sie dann erfahren, daß auch wir nicht alles blind unterschreiben, was die Autoren, die wir zitieren, so von sich geben. Aber wir trauen es dem mündigen Nachfolger Christi zu, selbst zu prüfen und das Gute zu behalten.
